Mercy Was Already Here

Context

Three travelers leave Abraham's tent. Two head for Sodom, the city where his nephew Lot lives. The third stays back — and tells Abraham that judgment is already on its way.

So Abraham stays standing while the others walk off. He has a small window, and he knows it.

Story

He doesn't open with worship. He goes straight at the math — what if there are fifty good people in there? Then he pushes to the line that should stop you.

"Will not the Judge of all the earth do what's right?"

A man made of dust just told God to act like God. And instead of lightning, God says fine. Fifty, I'll spare the place.

So Abraham negotiates. Forty-five. Forty. Thirty. Twenty. Every round he braces for the no, and every round the no doesn't come. He's the intern who keeps asking the CEO for one more concession and can't believe he's still in the room.

Ten, he finally goes. For the sake of ten, God says, I won't destroy it.

And then the conversation just ends. He stopped at ten.

What We Learn

Here's the part that won't let go: Abraham wasn't talking God into mercy. God was the one who stayed behind, who left the door cracked before a single word got spoken. The bargaining didn't change God's heart. It revealed it.

We pray like we're trying to flip a verdict that's already locked. But maybe prayer was never us pushing against a closed door.

Mercy was already standing in the room before he asked.
