Context

Jesus tells this parable in one verse, to people who understand dirt, day labor, and buried savings. In their world, treasure could disappear into a field and wait there for years.

Story

A hired worker is doing ordinary field work when his shovel hits something hard. He clears the dirt and realizes he has found the kind of treasure that can change a whole family line.

He buries it again, goes home, and starts selling everything he owns to buy the field.

The man does it "in his joy."

To everyone else, it looks like a reckless bet on random farmland. He knows it is the smartest thing he has ever done.

What We Learn

Other people may only see what faith costs you. They may not see the treasure that made the cost feel light.

Joy can look irresponsible from the outside when it is responding to something real.
