Context
Acts 5 drops us into the early church while the Jesus movement is still new and very public. Peter and the apostles are teaching in the temple courts, healing people, and drawing crowds. The Sadducees see the whole thing as a threat, so jealousy turns into an arrest.
Story
The apostles get locked in the public jail, but overnight an angel opens the doors and sends them right back to the temple. By morning, the council is assembled, the guards are posted, and the prisoners are already preaching again.
"we have to obey God rather than men."
That answer nearly gets them killed. Gamaliel slows the room down, but the council still has the apostles flogged and warned to stop speaking about Jesus. They walk out bleeding, and somehow they are rejoicing because they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.
What We Learn
Suffering did not make the apostles wonder if they had missed God. It showed them they were standing close enough to Jesus to get the same response he got.
Steadfast faith is not pretending the pain is small. It is knowing the name is worth more than the cost.
