The One Who Came Back

Context

Ten men stand at the edge of a village, on the road bending toward Jerusalem. They have leprosy, which back then doesn't just mean sick. It means cut off. No home, no temple, no hugs, no job. You're a walking quarantine sign, legally required to announce yourself unclean before anyone gets close.

One of them is a Samaritan. So even inside this little colony of outcasts, he's the outcast's outcast.

Story

Jesus walks the same road. They can't run to him, so they do the only thing they're allowed to do. They yell.

"Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"

He doesn't touch them. He doesn't even say they're healed. He tells them to go show themselves to the priests, which is the thing you only do after your skin is already clean. Act healed before anything's changed.

So all ten go, still spotted, still sick, walking toward a verdict they have no proof they'll pass. Somewhere on that road, mid-step, their skin clears.

Nine keep running toward everything they lost. One stops, looks at his own healed hands, and turns all the way around. He comes back loud, praising God, face-down in the dirt. The Samaritan. Of course it's the Samaritan.

What We Learn

All ten had faith. They obeyed, they walked, they got healed. The nine weren't faking anything. They got exactly what they asked for and went on with their lives.

But the one who came back got something the other nine never slowed down to receive. Healing got him on his feet. Gratitude got him face-to-face with the One who did it.
