Context

Before Samuel becomes one of the biggest voices in the Hebrew Bible, he's just a kid asleep on a mat in the temple, around twelve years old. His mother left him there as a toddler, and the old priest Eli has raised him ever since.

It's a quiet time for faith. Scripture drops a line that lands heavy: the word of the Lord was rare in those days. Not gone. Rare. The lamp of God still burns, but barely.

Story

In the middle of the night, a voice calls his name. Samuel sits up, sprints to Eli's room, sure the old man needs him. Eli says no, go lie down. It happens again. And a third time, a kid running through a dark temple in his pajamas, certain it's Eli, wrong every time.

Then Eli figures it out. This old priest whose own ears haven't heard from God in years is the one who recognizes who's calling. He tells Samuel what to say.

"Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening."

The voice comes a fourth time. And this time the kid doesn't run anywhere. He just answers.

What We Learn

Samuel didn't recognize the voice three whole times, and nobody in the room expected God to speak anymore. He kept running to the wrong door.

  • The voice you keep mistaking for someone else might be calling you by name
  • You don't need a louder voice, you need a quieter room
