The One Thing

Context

He has everything — money, religion, a clean reputation. In his world, wealth meant God's favor, full stop. He's kept the commandments since he was a kid, and he's not lying about it.

He runs up to a traveling rabbi in public, drops to his knees in the dirt, and asks one real question. Mark says Jesus loved him on the spot.

Story

"Good teacher," he asks, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus runs through the commandments, and the man means it when he says he's kept them all.

Then Jesus looks at him, really looks, and names the one thing he can't let go of.

"One thing you lack. Go, sell everything you have, give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

He doesn't argue. Doesn't negotiate down to a tithe. His face falls, and he turns and walks away sad, because he had great wealth.

What We Learn

He asked the right question and got an answer so specific it named the exact thing he was holding.

We pray for clarity. Then it comes with a price tag, and wanting the answer turns out to be different from being able to afford it.

Sometimes the saddest sentence in the Bible is the one where nobody yells.
