Context
Peter and John have been Christians for about eight weeks. They were fishermen who needed Jesus to explain the parables; now they are facing the same council that voted to kill him.
One healing at the temple has turned into a public problem. A man everyone knows as a lifelong beggar is suddenly standing, praising Jesus, and a crowd has gathered around the apostles.
Story
The council asks whose power made this happen. It is meant to corner them, but Peter answers in the name of Jesus, puts the crucifixion on the record, and names the rejected stone as the cornerstone.
Luke notices what breaks the room: Peter and John are uneducated, common men, and yet no one can dismiss them. The healed man is still standing there, making the evidence inconvenient.
"Whether it is right to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge — we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard."
So the council threatens them and lets them go. Peter and John leave with the kind of boldness nobody in that room knows how to explain.
What We Learn
Credentials are not the enemy here. But they are not the source of Peter's courage either.
Proximity to Jesus can make ordinary people steady in rooms built to intimidate them. Peter does not have every credential, but he has seen and heard something real, and that is enough to keep his voice from folding.
