Context
Nicodemus has spent his whole life being right. He's a Pharisee on the ruling council — basically the supreme court and the seminary faculty rolled into one. When he speaks, people write it down.
And he can't sleep. There's a teacher from Nazareth saying things that don't fit any of his boxes, and the man with all the answers is starting to suspect he's missing something.
Story
So he waits until it's dark. He pulls his cloak up, picks the hour when the streets are empty, and shows up at the door like he's meeting a dealer. He leads with smooth flattery, the way careful people do.
Jesus doesn't do small talk. He looks at this scholar and goes:
"No one can see the kingdom of God unless they're born again."
You can almost watch Nicodemus's brain short-circuit. He's built his whole identity on understanding things, and the answer he gets is a riddle. Then Jesus says the line everybody knows — that God so loved the world. The most quoted sentence in the Bible, spoken to one nervous man at night with his hood up. The scene just ends. He walks back into the dark the way he came.
What We Learn
We act like coming to God requires having it together first. Nicodemus had every credential there is, and it still wasn't enough — and Jesus met him in the dark anyway, no shame for the late hour.
Faith doesn't always show up in the daylight. Sometimes it knocks after dark, terrified, and asks anyway.
