She Stayed in the Reeds

Context

Pharaoh has signed a law to drown every Hebrew baby boy. One mother hides her son for three months, then runs out of hiding spots. So she waterproofs a basket, tucks him inside, and floats him down the river that is supposed to kill him.

Then she goes home. But her daughter does not. Miriam is maybe ten, twelve at the oldest, and she follows the basket alone.

Story

A child, tracking a baby through crocodile water, in the country that wants him dead. The basket drifts toward the royal bathing spot, of all the places on the Nile, and Pharaoh's own daughter wades in and finds him.

The princess looks down at this tiny crying Hebrew baby and her face changes. Miriam clocks it from the reeds. She has maybe five seconds. The princess could call a guard, or say one wrong sentence and end the whole family.

Miriam steps out anyway. A Hebrew kid, walking up to royalty uninvited, with a pitch.

"Hey, want me to grab a Hebrew woman to nurse him for you?"

The princess says yes. So Miriam runs and gets her own mom, and Pharaoh's daughter ends up paying her to nurse her own baby brother, in safety, on the palace payroll.

What We Learn

A ten-year-old just negotiated her brother out of a genocide, with the daughter of the man who ordered it. She is not the one in the basket. She is the older sister who could have gone home and let someone else handle it.

She stays. She watches. And when the five-second window opens, she walks into a conversation way above her pay grade.
