Context
Judas has already made the deal. He has walked with Jesus, watched the miracles, sat at the table, and still handed him over for thirty pieces of silver.
By morning, Jesus is bound and moving toward Pilate. The plan worked. That is exactly what breaks Judas.
Story
When Judas sees Jesus condemned, remorse hits him hard. He goes back to the priests and elders with the money in his hands, trying to reverse what cannot be reversed.
"I have sinned. I betrayed innocent blood."
The men who paid him will not carry any of it with him. They tell him it is his problem, so Judas throws the coins into the temple and walks out into despair. He takes his own life, and the priests use the money to buy a burial field for strangers.
What We Learn
This story has to be handled gently: Judas believed there was no door left open, and that belief was the lie.
Regret folds in on itself. Repentance turns toward mercy. If this is close to home, tell someone now; in the US, call or text 988. The door was never locked.
