The Old Men Weep

Context

Jewish exiles have finally come home to Jerusalem after seventy years in Babylon. That's three generations. Most of the people walking back in have never seen the city. They only know it from their grandparents' stories.

And the temple they came home for is rubble. Solomon's gold-and-cedar masterpiece has been ruins for decades. So they show up to start over.

Story

They build the altar first. Then they hire stonemasons, import cedar from Lebanon, the same supplier Solomon used. The day comes to lay the foundation. Priests in their robes, Levites with trumpets and cymbals, the whole crowd circled around a rectangle of dirt.

They start to sing.

"He is good. His love endures forever."

The young people scream and bang instruments. Loudest religious moment of their lives. But the old men are crying too. A different cry. They remember Solomon's temple before Babylon burned it down, and they can already tell this one will be smaller. Plainer. Less.

Scripture says nobody could tell the joy from the grief. The shouts and the weeping made the same sound. People standing far off couldn't figure out what they were hearing.

What We Learn

We treat joy and grief like they take turns. Like crying at a wedding means something's wrong with you. But here God watches a foundation get laid, and the soundtrack is both at once.

Grief isn't the opposite of gratitude. Sometimes it's the proof.
