Get Up and Walk

Context

There's a pool in Jerusalem called Bethesda, basically the ancient world's emergency room. Sick people, blind people, people who can't walk, all of them crowded around the water, waiting for it to stir. The belief was that the first one in got healed. First one. Singular.

So it's a waiting room where everyone races and the slowest person always loses. And one man here has been waiting thirty-eight years.

Story

Jesus walks in and sees him. Out of that whole crowd, this one guy, stuck so long the spot has stopped being a setback and become an address. Jesus doesn't open with comfort. No blanket, no kind word. He asks one question.

"Do you want to get well?"

The man never says yes. He explains. He has no one to help him into the water, and somebody always steps down ahead of him. Thirty-eight years of the same sentence, polished smooth from saying it so many times.

Jesus doesn't argue with the excuse or carry him to the water. He just says get up, pick up your mat, walk. And the man does, on two legs, in one second. No water. No angel. No race.

What We Learn

After thirty-eight years, the sickness isn't the only thing that's settled in. The waiting becomes a place you live. The excuse becomes furniture.

Jesus wasn't asking if the man wanted healing. He was asking if he wanted to stop waiting.
