A Chair With Your Name

Context

Years after the war that erased Saul's house, David finally sits secure as king. The whole bloodline that once hunted him is gone. But he can't stop thinking about one name: Jonathan, his best friend, killed on a battlefield his father lost.

So David asks a question no winning king is supposed to ask. Is there anyone left from that family I can show kindness to? In that world, a new king plus the old king's relatives makes a cleanup list, not a guest list.

Story

A servant says yes. There's a son of Jonathan's still alive. He can't walk, both feet crushed, hiding off the grid in a town whose name means the middle of nowhere. His name is Mephibosheth.

David sends for him, and a summons like that is the kind of call a dead enemy's grandson doesn't come back from. They carry him in. He hits the floor, braced for a sentence. David just says his name.

"Don't be afraid. I'm going to show you kindness for your father Jonathan's sake."

The land comes back. The seat comes with it. The man who expected an execution gets a chair, and the chapter keeps repeating one detail like it can't get over it. He ate at the king's table, like one of the king's own sons.

What We Learn

The Bible names his crushed feet twice in this scene. Same broken body, two completely different lives. Nothing about him changed. He didn't get healed, didn't earn it, didn't have anything to offer.

He just got found, carried in, and given a seat he never could have reached on his own.
