The Donkey Saw First

Context

Balaam is a freelance prophet-for-hire — a non-Israelite who somehow keeps hearing from the actual God of Israel, paid by kings to bless or curse on command. When Balak of Moab sees millions of Israelites camped next door, he sends cash to hire Balaam to curse them.

God already said no. Twice. Balaam saddles up and goes anyway.

Story

He's riding down the road, two servants behind him, the bribe probably already mentally spent. Then his donkey veers off into a field. He beats her. She scrapes against a wall and crushes his foot. He beats her again. She just lies down underneath him and won't move. He loses it.

What Balaam can't see, the donkey can. An angel of the Lord stands in the road with a drawn sword, ready to kill him. The donkey has saved his life three times, and her thanks is a stick. Then God opens her mouth.

"What did I ever do to you that you've hit me three times?"

Then God opens Balaam's eyes. He sees the angel. The sword. The death that was waiting for him three different times. The man hired for his spiritual vision got out-perceived by his ride.

What We Learn

God didn't owe Balaam a vision. He gave him a warning through the most unlikely mouth in the caravan — and Balaam nearly beat that warning to death before he heard it.

Sometimes the person with the cleanest read on the room isn't the one with the title. It's the quiet one you keep talking over because you've already decided where you're going.

The warning was right there. It just had four legs.
