He Picks First

Context

Abram comes back from Egypt with more livestock than he can count, and his nephew Lot is rich now too, just by riding alongside him. Two huge households crowded onto the same dry patch of Canaanite hill country.

It does not work. The herdsmen start fighting over water, over grazing strips, over whose goat ate whose grass.

Story

Abram pulls Lot aside. He's older, he's the patriarch, he's the one God made the promise to. By every rule of the ancient world, and ours, he picks first. Instead, he hands the younger guy the menu.

"The whole land is in front of you. You pick. If you go left, I'll go right. If you go right, I'll go left."

Lot looks out across the valley, sees the green Jordan plain glowing like a real estate listing, and grabs it on the spot. He rides off toward the good land. Abram is left on the dusty hillside with the rocks and whatever Lot didn't want.

Then God shows up. Lift your eyes, he says. North, south, east, west. Everything you can see is yours, forever. The land Lot just picked, included.

What We Learn

Abram didn't let Lot pick first because he was a pushover. He let Lot pick first because he already knew who his portion came from.

When the inheritance is coming from God, you don't have to grab. You don't have to fight your nephew for the better field.

The leftovers, it turns out, were never the leftovers.
